Painted by Nikolai Dmitriyevich Kuznetsov, a Russian artist linked to the realist Peredvizhniki group, the piece originates from his Odessa period during the late Tsarist era. After changing hands, it entered the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw, where it remains on display.

Kuznetsov’s career bridged Russian realism and the broader European Impressionist movement, reflecting the artistic currents of the late nineteenth century. The portrait’s restrained composition aligns with his practice of portraying everyday subjects with a dignified, observational approach.
