Portrait of the Artist Apollinary Vasnetsov

Kuznetsov employs chiaroscuro to model the figure, using contrasts of light and shadow to give the face and clothing a three‑dimensional quality. Careful rendering of the moustache, hair and fabric folds reflects the realist attention to detail characteristic of the Peredvizhniki school.

Created during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, the portrait remained in Russia and eventually entered the Tretyakov Gallery’s holdings. Kuznetsov, who worked mainly in Odessa before moving to Yugoslavia, produced the piece while active in the Russian art world of the 1890s.

Both artist and sitter were members of the Russian artistic community that sought to depict everyday reality without idealization. The portrait aligns with the Peredvizhniki’s emphasis on truthful representation and personal character, contrasting with the more decorative academic portraiture of the period.
