About this work
Overview
Peter van Boucle’s *Still Life with Carp and Pike* (1652) presents a domestic banquet scene rendered in oil on canvas. The composition centers on two large fish— a silver‑scaled carp and a elongated pike— positioned on a white linen drape. Around them lie oysters, a crusty loaf, onions, a knife, and a copper pot, all illuminated by a gentle, warm light that suggests a quiet, interior setting.
Subject & Meaning
The arrangement of fresh fish, shellfish, bread and vegetables conveys a theme of abundance and the pleasures of the table, a common motif in 17th‑century still‑life painting. By juxtaposing the gleaming scales of the carp and pike with the earthy textures of onions and bread, the work invites contemplation of material wealth, seasonal bounty, and the fleeting nature of food.
Technique & Style
Van Boucle employs a refined chiaroscuro, using soft shadows to model the forms and give them a three‑dimensional presence. Careful brushwork captures the iridescent sheen of the fish scales and the roughness of the bread crust, while a limited warm palette unifies the scene. The subtle gradations of light across the cloth and metal pot enhance the sense of depth and tactile realism.
History & Provenance
Created in Paris during the artist’s mature period, the painting reflects the Flemish‑Dutch still‑life tradition that flourished in the mid‑17th century.
