About this work

Overview

Untitled is a 1897 lithograph by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, held at The Museum of Modern Art.

Subject & Meaning

The print depicts two women outdoors, one wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat with a red flower and holding a fan, the other dressed in a dark cloak with a white wig. Their soft facial features are rendered with loose, quick lines.

Technique & Style

Renoir employed smudgy, sketchy strokes in the lithograph, evoking the effect of a rapid drawing. The color palette is subdued, with the exception of the vibrant red flower and fan, which provide a pop of color.
