Created in 1548, this oil painting presents a formally dressed woman rendered with the restrained realism typical of the Flemish Renaissance. The figure stands before a dark, unadorned backdrop, her gaze meeting the viewer’s directly, while her hands are folded in front of her. The work is held by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp and exemplifies the portraiture for which Pieter Pourbus is known.

Subject & Meaning

The sitter is portrayed in a sober black dress with a high collar and a modest white head covering, suggesting modesty and social standing. Her slight turn to the right and steady eye contact convey a calm confidence, while the clasped hands and serious expression reinforce a dignified, contemplative presence typical of mid‑16th‑century portrait conventions.

Technique & Style

Pourbus employs oil on panel to achieve a nuanced chiaroscuro, allowing the figure to emerge from the deep shadows of the background. Fine brushwork delineates the texture of the fabric and the delicate modeling of the face, while the limited palette of dark tones accentuates the three‑dimensionality of the body and creates a somber atmosphere.

History & Provenance

The painting was executed in Bruges, where Pourbus spent his career producing religious commissions and private portraits. After changing hands over the centuries, it entered the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s representation of Northern Renaissance portraiture.
