About this work

Overview

This late 15th-century panel painting by Raffaellino del Garbo presents a sacra conversazione, a devotional format in which the Virgin and Christ Child are surrounded by saints. Executed in tempera and oil on wood, the work measures approximately 160 by 170 centimeters and remains part of the Gemäldegalerie Berlin’s permanent collection.

Subject & Meaning

The central figures—Mary seated on a throne and the infant Christ—anchor a symmetrical arrangement of four attendant saints.

The central figures—Mary seated on a throne and the infant Christ—anchor a symmetrical arrangement of four attendant saints. Their identities remain partially uncertain, though attributes such as wings, clerical vestments, and martyrs’ palms suggest a mix of archangels, bishops, and early Christian martyrs. The grouping underscores intercession, inviting viewers to seek divine favor through these holy intermediaries.

Technique & Style

Raffaellino employs a refined linear approach, characteristic of late Quattrocento Florentine painting. Delicate contours define drapery folds, while subtle gradations of tone—rather than stark chiaroscuro—model faces and limbs. Gold leaf accents halo edges and throne details, reinforcing the sacred hierarchy. Landscape elements in the distance are rendered with atmospheric perspective, softening the transition from foreground to horizon.

History & Provenance

Dated 1498, the painting was likely commissioned for a Florentine church or private chapel. Its early history is undocumented, but by the 19th century it entered the collections of the Prussian royal museum. Following the division of Berlin’s holdings after World War II, the panel was assigned to the Gemäldegalerie, where it has undergone conservation to stabilize paint layers and support.

Context

Created during a period of political and religious flux in Florence, the work reflects the city’s continued patronage of devotional art despite Savonarola’s moral reforms. Raffaellino, a pupil of Filippino Lippi, synthesized influences from Botticelli and Ghirlandaio, contributing to the transition from Gothic elegance to High Renaissance monumentality.

Legacy

While less celebrated than works by his contemporaries, Raffaellino’s painting exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of late 15th-century Florentine workshops. Its inclusion in the Gemäldegalerie’s holdings has allowed scholars to study the evolution of sacra conversazione compositions, particularly the balance between decorative richness and spatial coherence.
