About this work
Overview
This oil-on-canvas work, created in the final decade of the artist’s career, dates from roughly 1665 to 1669 and is held by the Hermitage Museum. The composition presents a dramatic encounter between three figures, rendered with a deep, shadowed background that heightens the tension of the moment.
Subject & Meaning
The central figure, a man in a red robe clutching his chest, is traditionally identified as Haman from the biblical Book of Esther, reacting to the revelation of his downfall. Earlier scholarship linked the scene to the Old Testament episode in which King David dispatches Uriah to the battlefield, a reading that placed the foreground figure as Uriah and the background figures as David and the prophet Nathan.
Technique & Style
The painter employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, using a single, strong light source to illuminate the protagonists against a near‑black backdrop. This contrast of light and darkness creates a three‑dimensional effect and emphasizes the emotional intensity of the figures, a hallmark of the artist’s late style.
History & Provenance
The canvas entered the Russian imperial collection in 1773 under the title “Haman Recognises His Fate,” a name that the Hermitage continues to use. The alternative identification as “David and Uriah” was proposed by Abraham Bredius in the mid‑20th century and has been supported by several subsequent scholars.
Context
The work belongs to a period when the artist frequently revisited biblical narratives, exploring themes of power, guilt, and divine judgment. Its ambiguous subject reflects the fluidity of iconographic interpretation in the Dutch Golden Age, where a single composition could accommodate multiple scriptural references.
