Raising of the Cross is an oil painting by the Dutch Golden Age artist Rembrandt. It dates from 1633 and is held in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek.
About this work
Overview
Created in 1633, this oil painting by Rembrandt depicts the moment a group of figures hoists the wooden cross bearing Christ. The central figure is illuminated, his outstretched arms contrasting with a deep, shadowed backdrop, while surrounding characters in armor and robes either support the cross or observe the scene.
Subject & Meaning
The work visualises the biblical episode of Christ’s crucifixion, focusing on the physical act of raising the cross. The stark lighting on the Savior’s pale body underscores his vulnerability, while the surrounding participants convey a mixture of duty, reverence, and tension, inviting contemplation of sacrifice and collective responsibility.
Technique & Style
Rembrandt employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, using a concentrated light source to carve out the figure’s face and limbs against an almost black background. The brushwork combines smooth modeling on the illuminated flesh with more textured handling in the darker areas, creating a dramatic spatial depth characteristic of his early Dutch Golden Age period.
History & Provenance
Commissioned by Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, the painting formed part of a passion series ordered in 1633. It has remained in an unbroken line of ownership from its completion to the present, now residing in Munich’s Alte Pinakothek, where it is displayed alongside its companion piece, The Descent from the Cross.
Context
The canvas belongs to Rembrandt’s early mature phase, when he was responding to the demands of aristocratic patrons for religious narratives. The inclusion of contemporary armor and attire reflects the 17th‑century Dutch milieu, linking the biblical story to the viewer’s own world and the political climate of the Dutch Republic.
