About this work
This painting shows a European woman in fancy dress holding a book and a lyre.
This painting shows a European woman in fancy dress holding a book and a lyre. The artist copied her pose from an old print but flipped it left to right. The colors stay bright and flat—no soft blur or thick paint.
This was common in India then. Artists often traced European prints but kept their own style. The print came from “The Liberal Arts” by Goltzius, made around 1600. A Dutch print became Indian art.
