Removed from its manuscript, the painting was acquired by the museum from the London art market in 1913. It is one of at least seven surviving illustrated copies of the Baburnama from 1589-1605.

Commissioned by Emperor Akbar, the Persian translation of Baburnama by Mirza Abdu'r Rahim aimed to disseminate Babur's memoirs widely within the Mughal Empire, with this copy produced for royal use.
Legacy
Now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the painting provides insight into Mughal artistic and literary patronage, as well as the empire's cultural and imperial narratives.
