About this work

Overview

Created in 1894, *Akolik* is an oil painting by Russian landscape artist Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov. The work belongs to the realist Peredvizhniki circle, yet it displays the painter’s later, more experimental handling of light and colour. Currently it is part of the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Subject & Meaning

The canvas depicts a sparsely furnished interior bathed in subdued illumination. A bed with a white sheet and pillow occupies the left side, while a table holds a lamp, a glass and assorted objects. The limited light source creates a quiet, introspective atmosphere, suggesting a moment of private contemplation rather than a narrative scene.

Technique & Style

Polenov employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, contrasting deep shadows with the narrow glow of the lamp. This treatment enhances the three‑dimensionality of the objects and gives the scene a tactile realism. The handling of colour and brushwork hints at a post‑impressionist sensibility, moving beyond strict realism toward a more expressive rendering of light.

History & Provenance

After its exhibition in the late nineteenth century, *Akolik* entered the holdings of the Tretyakov Gallery, where it has remained on public view. Polenov, often dubbed the “Knight of Beauty” for his synthesis of European and Russian artistic currents, used works such as this to illustrate his belief that art should convey happiness and emotional uplift.
