About this work
Overview
Created in 1673 by the Cretan painter Victor of Crete, this tempera panel presents a compact, circular composition of the Resurrection scene. The work belongs to the later phase of the Cretan school, a tradition that merged Byzantine iconography with influences from Venetian painting.
Subject & Meaning
At the centre, a muscular figure clothed in red rises triumphantly, clutching a cross‑staff aloft. Beneath him lie two helmeted soldiers in a slumped posture, while a third stands upright, gazing upward. The arrangement captures the moment of Christ’s emergence from the tomb, emphasizing his victorious emergence over the sleeping guards.
Technique & Style
Executed in tempera, the painting employs the flat, luminous color fields typical of Byzantine icons, accented with gold leaf that catches the light. The figures are rendered with a restrained simplicity that echoes earlier Cretan masters such as Michael Damaskinos, while the composition shows a subtle adoption of the refined “maniera greca” introduced through Venetian contact.
History & Provenance
Victor of Crete was an active 17th‑century artist known for a prolific output; ninety‑five of his paintings and a single fresco survive today. This work, like many of his, was likely intended for a liturgical setting, as suggested by the gold background and the devotional subject matter.
Context
The painting reflects the late Cretan school’s synthesis of Eastern Orthodox iconographic conventions with Western stylistic elements. By the mid‑1600s, Crete’s artistic production was heavily shaped by Venetian rule, resulting in works that retained traditional iconography while incorporating more naturalistic detail and spatial depth.
