About this work
Overview
Artemisia Gentileschi’s oil painting of Saint Catherine of Alexandria dates from the early 1630s. Executed on canvas, the work portrays a youthful, solemn figure seated against a dark interior that opens onto a distant seascape and mountains. The saint holds an open book and a palm frond, symbols of her learned martyrdom, while a shaft of light illuminates her face and dress.
Subject & Meaning
The composition presents Catherine, a 4th‑century Egyptian virgin celebrated for her steadfast faith. Her calm, direct gaze and individualized facial features convey inner resolve. The purple silk garment alludes to her noble birth, and the illuminated book underscores her reputation as a learned woman, while the palm signifies her martyr’s victory.
Technique & Style
Gentileschi employs a refined Baroque language, moving beyond her early Caravaggesque tenebrism toward a lighter palette reminiscent of Venetian colourism. Fine brushwork renders the texture of the silk dress and the distant landscape, while chiaroscuro creates a sharp contrast between the illuminated figure and the surrounding gloom.
History & Provenance
Created circa 1627–1635, the painting entered the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm in 2020. It joins other versions of the saint by Gentileschi, including a circa 1614–1615 work now shown in Oslo and a self‑portrait as Saint Catherine from the mid‑1610s held in the Royal Collection, illustrating the artist’s recurring engagement with the theme.
Context
Gentileschi, trained by her father Orazio and influenced by Caravaggio’s dramatic realism, became renowned for portraying powerful women from biblical and mythological narratives. Saint Catherine fits within this oeuvre, reflecting both the artist’s personal identification with strong female saints and the broader 17th‑century interest in depicting virtuous, learned women.
