Commissioned by diplomat Robert Liston, the work first appeared at Edinburgh’s Royal Institution, a precursor to the Royal Scottish Academy. It later featured in an 1842 Royal Academy retrospective in London. Multiple versions were produced; the most recognized copy entered the Scottish National Gallery in 1898, while another resides in Aberdeen Art Gallery since 1972.

The image’s popularity spurred a series of prints, including an engraving by James Stewart now held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These reproductions helped disseminate Wilkie’s pastoral vision throughout the United Kingdom, cementing the painting’s role as a visual reference for early‑19th‑century Scottish countryside narratives.
