Portrait of Catherine II the Legislatress in the Temple Devoted to the Godess of Justice

Levitzky employs a restrained palette of whites, reds, and deep shadows, using chiaroscuro to model the figure’s form against the dark interior. The flowing drapery and delicate brushwork echo Rococo sensibilities, while the crisp rendering of the sash and the subtle suggestion of architectural elements convey a sense of controlled elegance.

Created in the final decade of Catherine II’s reign, the portrait was likely intended for official display or diplomatic exchange. After changing hands through private collections, it entered the Tretyakov Gallery in the early twentieth century, where it has been conserved as a representative example of Levitzky’s court portraiture.
