About this work
Overview
Created in 1551, this oil painting portrays the biblical Flight into Egypt in a style that anticipates early Baroque sensibilities. Executed by Francesco Bassano the Younger, the work now belongs to the collection of Madrid’s Museo del Prado.
Subject & Meaning
The composition gathers the Holy Family and their attendants as they move through a nocturnal forest. A woman in a light veil cradles an infant, while a man leans on a staff; a donkey and a sheep accompany the procession, suggesting both the journey’s humility and its divine purpose.
Technique & Style
Bassano employs pronounced chiaroscuro, allowing deep shadows to dominate the wooded backdrop while narrow shafts of light illuminate the figures. This contrast emphasizes the weary yet resolute expressions, especially the calm face of the mother, and gives the scene a palpable sense of night travel.
History & Provenance
Born in 1549 near Venice, Francesco Bassano the Younger was the eldest son of Jacopo Bassano and trained in the family workshop alongside his brothers. After completing his apprenticeship, he assumed responsibility for the Bassano workshop’s Venetian branch, where he produced this work before it entered the Prado’s holdings.
Context
The painting reflects the mid‑16th‑century Italian shift toward more dramatic lighting and emotional immediacy, hallmarks of the emerging Baroque aesthetic. Its subject, the Flight into Egypt, was a popular devotional theme, allowing artists to explore themes of protection, exile, and divine guidance.
