About this work
Overview
Created in 1570 by Francesco Bassano the Younger, this oil painting depicts a biblical episode in which a divine figure admonishes the first man. Executed in the early Baroque idiom of Italy, the work belongs to the religious genre and is currently housed in Madrid’s Museo del Prado.
Subject & Meaning
The composition centers on a nude Adam standing amid a tangled woodland populated by a variety of animals—cattle, goats, birds, and a donkey. Above him, a cloaked deity hovers, gesturing downward as if delivering a reprimand, suggesting the moment of divine censure following the transgression in the Garden of Eden.
Technique & Style
Bassano employs a dense, almost tactile rendering of foliage and fauna, filling the canvas with intricate details such as individual feathers and fur. The use of chiaroscuro heightens the drama, with stark contrasts between the shadowed forest floor and the luminous aura surrounding the celestial figure, characteristic of early Baroque visual language.
History & Provenance
Born in Bassano del Grappa in 1549, Francesco Bassano the Younger was the eldest son of Jacopo Bassano and trained alongside his brothers in the family workshop. After its creation, the painting entered the Spanish royal collection and eventually was transferred to the Museo del Prado, where it remains on display.
Context
The work reflects the period’s interest in dramatizing biblical narratives through naturalistic detail and emotional intensity. By populating the Edenic scene with a chaotic menagerie, Bassano underscores the disorder introduced by humanity’s fall, aligning with Counter‑Reformation aims to convey moral lessons through vivid, accessible imagery.
