Solimena employs chiaroscuro to model forms and create spatial depth, a technique learned from Luca Giordano and Mattia Preti. The brushwork is loose and energetic, typical of a sketch, yet precise in guiding the viewer’s eye toward the central cross. Clouds and distant figures suggest an expansive heavenly domain, rendered with atmospheric perspective and subtle tonal gradations.

The painting entered the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, where it remains today. Its status as an oil sketch indicates it was not a final commission but a working study, possibly for a church altarpiece in Naples. Such sketches were often retained by the artist or passed to students, offering insight into his creative process during a period of stylistic evolution.

In the early 1700s, Naples was a vibrant center of religious art, with demand for large-scale devotional imagery. Solimena, as both practitioner and teacher, helped shape a generation of painters who moved from Baroque exuberance toward classical clarity. This sketch reflects that shift, balancing emotional intensity with compositional order, aligning with broader trends in Southern Italian art.

Solimena’s influence extended through his academy in Naples, where his methods were transmitted to students who later dominated regional painting.
