Terzi employs a Mannerist approach, evident in the elongated proportions and the stylized treatment of the figure’s drapery. The dark background isolates the subject, while subtle chiaroscuro models her face and the gold‑threaded fabric, creating a sense of volume and material richness.

Created while Terzi served as court painter to the Habsburgs in Vienna, the portrait remained within the imperial collection before being transferred to the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Its provenance traces directly to the Austrian court, confirming its original function as a dynastic record.

The painting belongs to a period when Italian artists were commissioned by Northern courts to produce portraits that combined Italianate elegance with local expectations of representation. Terzi, a pupil of Giovanni Battista Moroni, brought the meticulous observation of Moroni’s portraiture to the more decorative Mannerist idiom favored by the Habsburgs.
