Van der Donckt employed a refined oil technique, rendering the textures of silk, gold embroidery, and polished wood with subtle chiaroscuro. The palette balances deep reds, dark blues, and muted greens, allowing the luminous flesh tones to emerge against a backdrop of a green wall bearing heraldic insignia.

Born in Aalst in 1757, van der Donckt was active in Bruges as a portraitist, miniaturist, and pastellist. After its completion, the portrait entered local collections and eventually was acquired by the Groeningemuseum, where it remains on display as a representative example of the artist’s civic commissions.

The painting reflects the post‑Napoleonic period in which Flemish cities reasserted local governance. Portraits of mayors and burghers served both as personal commemoration and as visual affirmation of civic continuity, a function that this work fulfills through its dignified representation and heraldic symbols.
