Van der Donckt employed the smooth, refined brushwork associated with the Rococo tradition, using oil pigments to achieve a lifelike texture in the flesh tones and fabric. The delicate handling of light on the lace‑trimmed shirt and the subtle modeling of the hair demonstrate the artist’s skill in creating a realistic yet elegant representation.

Born in Aalst in 1757, van der Donckt worked primarily in Bruges until his death in 1813. The portrait entered the Groeningemuseum’s holdings at an unspecified date, where it remains part of the museum’s Flemish painting collection, illustrating the artist’s contribution to late Rococo portraiture in the Low Countries.

The painting emerges at a transitional moment when Rococo’s decorative lightness was giving way to the more restrained Neoclassicism that would dominate the early nineteenth century. Van der Donckt’s work reflects the lingering Rococo taste for elegance and fine detail while anticipating the emerging emphasis on sober realism in portraiture.
