Portrait of Daniil V. Shukhanov (1745-1813/14)

Portrait of Daniil V. Shukhanov (1745-1813/14) is an oil painting by George Dawe. It dates from 1825 and is held in the collection of the Hermitage Museum.
About this work
Overview
George Dawe, a portrait painter who settled in Saint Petersburg in 1819, created this oil portrait in 1825. It shows Daniil Vasiljevič Šuhanov, a Russian figure of the early nineteenth century, and is now held by the State Hermitage Museum.
Subject & Meaning
The sitter is presented in a formal military dress, his coat adorned with medals, brass buttons and a vivid red trim. A thick fur collar frames his neatly trimmed mustache, emphasizing his rank and status within the Russian armed forces of the period.
Technique & Style
Dawe employs a pronounced impasto, especially on the fur and the richly textured fabric, giving the surface a tactile quality. Subtle modelling of light and shadow across the face creates a convincing three‑dimensional effect, while the dark, unadorned background isolates the figure.
History & Provenance
After its completion, the portrait entered the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, where it remains on display. Dawe’s work on this piece follows his extensive series of portraits of Russian generals for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace.
