About this work
Overview
The Banquet of Cleopatra, painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in 1744, is an oil painting now housed at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. It depicts a legendary banquet hosted by Cleopatra for Marc Antony, based on accounts by Pliny and Plutarch.
Subject & Meaning
The painting illustrates the infamous moment when Cleopatra dissolves an expensive pearl in her wine before drinking it, as described in ancient texts. This dramatic gesture is central to the scene, capturing a blend of luxury, drama, and historical reference.
Technique & Style
Tiepolo employed chiaroscuro to create strong contrasts between light and dark, enhancing the scene's depth and drama. The lavish banquet setting, with figures in varied attire against a classical backdrop, showcases Tiepolo's mastery of composition and atmospheric lighting.
History & Provenance
This is the first of three large paintings Tiepolo dedicated to the subject. A modello (oil study) for this work exists in the Musée Cognacq-Jay in Paris, previously owned by Count Francesco Algarotti. The painting's current location is the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
Context
Tiepolo revisited the theme in later works, including frescoes at the Palazzo Labia in Venice and two large canvases at the Arkhangelskoye Palace near Moscow (1747). These works demonstrate the artist's sustained interest in depicting the lives of ancient figures in grand, theatrical settings.
Legacy
The Banquet of Cleopatra contributes to Tiepolo's reputation for capturing dramatic, historically inspired scenes with technical brilliance. Its existence alongside related works and studies highlights the artist's exploratory approach to composition and theme.
