The panel was originally part of a larger altarpiece, likely intended for private devotion. After remaining in the Habsburg collections, it entered the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s holdings, where it has been displayed as a distinct component of Bosch’s oeuvre.

Bosch’s practice of painting related scenes on opposite sides of a single panel was uncommon, allowing a visual dialogue between the infant’s tentative steps and the adult Christ’s burden.
