Christ on the Mount of Olives

Gossaert employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, contrasting deep shadows of the rocky hillside with the soft glow of moonlight and the angelic figure. The handling of oil paint reveals fine detail in the drapery and foliage, while the overall arrangement reflects the Romanist tendency to merge Italian compositional ideas with Northern realism.

After its creation, the painting entered various collections before being acquired by the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, where it remains on view. Gossaert’s later travels to Italy (1508‑09) positioned him among the first Dutch and Flemish artists to absorb Italian influences, a development evident in this earlier work.
