About this work
Overview
The work forms the rear panel of the side wings of Jan Gossaert’s early 16th‑century triptych, known as the Malvagna panels. Executed in oil on wood around 1510, the composition depicts the biblical expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. Today the panel is housed in the Galleria Interdisciplinare Regionale at Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo, Italy.
Subject & Meaning
The scene captures the moment the first humans are driven from the earthly paradise, emphasizing their sorrow and the gravity of their transgression. By focusing on the figures’ despondent expressions and the stark landscape beyond, the painting underscores themes of loss, divine judgment, and the beginning of human suffering.
Technique & Style
Gossaert employs the meticulous detail and luminous colour characteristic of the Northern Renaissance, rendering textures such as skin, foliage, and fabric with fine brushwork. The oil medium allows subtle modelling of light and shadow, creating a three‑dimensional presence that enhances the emotional intensity of the narrative.
History & Provenance
Created in the early 1510s, the panel remained part of a larger devotional triptych before entering private collections. By the 19th century it was documented in the archives of the University of Leuven, and later transferred to the Palazzo Abatellis, where it has been on public display since the mid‑20th century.
Context
During Gossaert’s career, artists in the Low Countries were integrating Italianate compositional ideas with their own detailed realism. This work reflects that synthesis, marrying a classical architectural backdrop with the Northern emphasis on naturalistic detail, illustrating the cross‑cultural currents of the period.
