About this work
Overview
Created in 1798, this oil painting presents the Russian Grand Dukes Alexander and Constantine standing side by side in formal attire. The work exemplifies the neoclassical approach of its creator, Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder, an Austrian‑Italian artist active in the late eighteenth century. It is part of the State Hermitage Museum’s collection in St. Petersburg.
Subject & Meaning
The portrait features Alexander I, who would become Tsar of Russia, and his brother Konstantin Pavlovich, both dressed in elaborate military and courtly garments. Their poised stance, with a sword and a ceremonial baton, underscores their high rank and the dynastic authority of the Romanov family during a period of political consolidation.
Technique & Style
Lampi employs a restrained palette and careful modeling of light to render the textures of silk, velvet and metal. Subtle chiaroscuro creates depth, highlighting the folds of the cloaks and the reflective surfaces of buttons and ornaments, while a soft, directed illumination brings out the facial features and lends a three‑dimensional presence to the figures.
History & Provenance
After the third partition of Poland, Lampi moved to the Russian Empire, where he received patronage from Tsar Paul I. The painting remained in imperial collections and was eventually transferred to the State Hermitage Museum, where it continues to be displayed as part of the museum’s holdings of late‑eighteenth‑century portraiture.
