About this work
Overview
Created in 1844, this oil painting by Austrian artist Joseph von Führich portrays a biblical moment when the people of Jerusalem confront the looming threat of Antiochus IV Epiphanes’ siege. The composition divides the canvas between a tranquil cityscape below and a turbulent sky above, emphasizing the contrast between earthly calm and celestial upheaval.
Subject & Meaning
The work visualizes the collective anxiety of Jerusalem’s inhabitants as they gaze skyward, aware of the impending military assault. By juxtaposing the fearful crowd with airborne warriors and horses, Führich suggests a divine or prophetic dimension to the conflict, underscoring themes of destiny, divine judgment, and human vulnerability.
Technique & Style
Führich employs a clear, detailed approach characteristic of the Biedermeier aesthetic, combined with the Nazarene school’s devotion to line and narrative. Strong chiaroscuro intensifies the contrast between illuminated figures and shadowed background, while the upward‑directing composition guides the eye toward the chaotic aerial scene, creating a palpable sense of tension.
History & Provenance
The painting entered the collection of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, where it remains on display. Its acquisition reflects the 19th‑century Austrian interest in historic and religious subjects, aligning with the museum’s broader mission to preserve works that illustrate European artistic and cultural heritage.
Context
Führich’s choice of a biblical siege aligns with the Nazarene movement’s revival of early Christian and medieval motifs, while the Biedermeier period’s emphasis on clarity and moral narrative informs the work’s precise rendering. The piece thus bridges Romantic spiritualism with the era’s preference for orderly, didactic visual storytelling.
