The composition centers on a seated male figure wrapped in a cloth, representing Abraham poised on a rocky ledge. To his left a woman gestures toward him, while a bearded elder with a staff stands behind her. On the opposite side a second bearded figure reaches toward the central man, and a crowd of background figures, some suggested to be angels, heighten the narrative tension of divine intervention.
Technique & Style
Mehus employs the chiaroscuro typical of early Baroque, contrasting the deep shadows of the terrain and garments with the luminous flesh tones of the characters. The palette moves from somber earth tones to brighter highlights that draw attention to the central drama. Brushwork is controlled yet expressive, emphasizing the emotional intensity of the moment.
History & Provenance
After its creation, the painting entered the service of Prince Mattias de’ Medici, for whom Mehus served as court painter in Florence. The work later passed through various collections before being acquired by the Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains on display as a representative example of Mehus’s religious output.
Context
Mehus’s career unfolded at the intersection of Flemish training and Italian Baroque patronage. Working in Florence, he catered to aristocratic and ecclesiastical clients, producing works that combined Northern attention to detail with the dramatic vigor of Italian Baroque. *The Sacrifice of Isaac* reflects this synthesis, illustrating both the artist’s technical skill and the period’s fascination with biblical pathos.
