About this work
Overview
Maarten van Heemskerck’s oil triptych titled *Calvary* dates from around 1550 and is part of the State Hermitage Museum’s collection. Executed in three adjoining panels, the work presents a narrative of the crucifixion, characteristic of the artist’s mature period.
Subject & Meaning
The central panel concentrates on the crucifixion itself, showing Christ nailed to the cross amid a crowd of soldiers, onlookers and a fallen figure. Flanking scenes expand the narrative: the left panel portrays a figure being lifted upward by two men, while the right panel gathers kneeling figures beneath a second upright cross, emphasizing themes of sacrifice and witness.
Technique & Style
Heemskerck employs a Mannerist visual language, evident in the elongated figures and dramatic composition. A dark, unified background heightens contrast, allowing the illuminated bodies to emerge with sharp clarity. The paint is applied in relatively thick layers in places, giving the flesh and drapery a tactile surface that enhances the chiaroscuro effect.
History & Provenance
After completing his studies with Jan van Scorel and a formative Italian journey between 1532 and 1536, Heemskerck returned to Haarlem, where he produced this work. The triptych eventually entered the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, where it remains on display.
Context
The painting reflects the mid‑sixteenth‑century Dutch engagement with Italian Mannerism, merging Northern devotional traditions with the heightened emotionalism and complex spatial arrangements encountered during Heemskerck’s travels. Its religious subject aligns with the artist’s broader output of biblical scenes and portraiture.
