About this work

Overview

Created around 1520, this oil on panel depicts a seated figure in red cradling an infant, accompanied by two kneeling women and two hovering angels. The composition is set within an opulently decorated interior featuring stone-like columns, a golden throne, and a luminous celestial presence.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure is the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, flanked by Saint Catherine of Alexandria, identifiable by her wheel‑topped staff, and Saint Barbara, traditionally shown with a book. The saints’ presence underscores themes of piety and intercession within a devotional setting.

Technique & Style

Executed by the anonymous Antwerp master known as the Master of Hoogstraeten, the work displays the meticulous handling of oil paint characteristic of early‑16th‑century Netherlandish art, with careful attention to texture, rich coloration, and intricate architectural details.

History & Provenance

Originally linked to Hugo van der Goes, the attribution shifted after scholarly debate and was finally settled in 1929 by Max Friedländer, who compared it to a comparable piece in Vienna’s Benda collection. The painting now resides in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery.

Context

The Master of Hoogstraeten was active in Antwerp between roughly 1490 and 1530, a period marked by the flourishing of devotional panels. The work may relate to a series titled The Seven Sorrows of the Virgin, formerly housed in St Catherine’s Church in Hoogstraten and now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp.
