About this work

Overview

Created in 1874, this oil painting depicts a bearded man seated before a dark, unadorned backdrop. The figure is dressed in a red outer garment with a fur-trimmed collar visible, and a wide-brimmed hat is tipped slightly to one side. The work belongs to the collection of Warsaw’s National Museum and exemplifies the artist’s early realist approach.

Subject & Meaning

The sitter, rendered with a long, curling beard and expressive eyes, appears contemplative, his posture relaxed yet dignified. The simple background isolates him, focusing attention on his facial features and attire, suggesting an intent to capture individual character rather than narrative context.

Technique & Style

Employing a pronounced contrast of light and darkness, the painter accentuates the facial plane while allowing the surrounding shadows to recede. Thick, impasto brushwork is evident in the rendering of the beard and hat, adding tactile quality, whereas smoother passages define the garment’s folds, reflecting a realist commitment to material observation.

History & Provenance

The artist, a Polish‑Jewish painter trained under Jan Matejko, produced this work shortly before his untimely death at twenty‑three. Though his career was brief, he achieved early recognition, and the portrait entered the National Museum in Warsaw, where it remains on public display.
