This contrast sharpens the facial features and gives the composition a three‑dimensional quality. The portrait was executed in the final decade of the 1600s, a period when Antwerp's artistic market favored dignified, individually rendered likenesses. After its creation, the painting entered private collections before being acquired by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, where it has been conserved and exhibited as part of the museum’s Flemish holdings.
