Abildgaard’s handling of oil paint renders the textures of the harp and the folds of the blue robe with subtle chiaroscuro, while the stark illumination against a somber background creates a theatrical contrast typical of the period’s historicist approach.

Abildgaard, a professor at the Royal Danish Academy and royal history painter, produced the work during his mature phase, when he was also contributing decorative schemes to Christiansborg and Fredensborg palaces. The canvas entered the collection of Denmark’s National Gallery, Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains part of the institution’s holdings of late‑18th‑century Danish art.
