About this work

Overview

Portrait of a Young Man is an oil on panel painting created by Parmigianino around 1530. It is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where it has been part of the collection since 1682.

Subject & Meaning

The subject is a bearded man wearing a black hat, dark robe with a white collar, and rings, conveying an air of solemnity and contemplation. Traditionally identified as a self-portrait based on an inscription on the reverse, this attribution has been debated among art historians, with some proposing alternative identities such as Bonifacio Gozzadino or an unknown Bolognese count.

Technique & Style

The painting features a distinctive use of chiaroscuro, enhancing the sense of depth and solemnity. A circular frame in the background, adorned with a carved figure, adds to the compositional depth, characteristic of Parmigianino's innovative approach to spatial arrangement.

History & Provenance

Acquired by the Uffizi on 27 October 1682, the painting was already in Florence by the time of Cosimo III, possibly earlier. Copies exist in the Museo di Capodimonte, Accademia di San Luca, and Galleria nazionale di Parma, one of which bears the date 'MDXX', potentially correlating to the Uffizi work's creation.

Context

The work's authenticity as a self-portrait has been supported by some, like Freedberg and P. Rossi, who compare it with probable self-portrait drawings (e.g., in the Devonshire Collection and Albertina), while others have dismissed the identification due to discrepancies with securely attributed self-portraits, such as Self-portrait in a Convex Mirror.

Legacy

Despite the debate over its subject's identity, the painting remains a significant example of Parmigianino's style, particularly in its use of chiaroscuro and compositional innovation, influencing perceptions of 16th-century Italian portraiture.
