About this work
Overview
Saint with Two Angels is an oil on panel painting created by Parmigianino around 1523-1524. It is currently housed at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, donated by Baroness Emilie Margarethe Beaulieu-Marconnay in 1913.
Subject & Meaning
The painting depicts a serene female saint, identified by some attributes in related works as possibly Catherine of Alexandria, accompanied by two angels. One angel holds a palm frond (symbol of martyrdom), while the other grasps a sword, underscoring the saint's martyrdom. The saint's calm demeanor and the angels' gentle expressions convey a mood of peace and tranquility.
Technique & Style
The work showcases Parmigianino's mastery of chiaroscuro, employing strong light and dark contrasts to imbue the figures with volume and depth. The soft, muted background enhances the serene atmosphere, while the saint's flowing robe and the angels' poses reflect the artist's attention to graceful, naturalistic forms.
History & Provenance
Dating to circa 1524, it aligns stylistically with Parmigianino's contemporaneous works, such as the Doria Madonna and the portrait of Paola Gonzaga.
Initially, a Vienna version was considered the original, but after a 1932 X-ray revealed an under-drawing beneath later repaints on the Frankfurt piece, consensus shifted in its favor. Most scholars, except for Copertini and Frölich-Bum, now attribute the Frankfurt painting as autograph. Dating to circa 1524, it aligns stylistically with Parmigianino's contemporaneous works, such as the Doria Madonna and the portrait of Paola Gonzaga.
Context
The painting reflects the influence of Correggio, evident in the pose of the saint, which echoes Correggio's Diana in the Camera della Badessa, Parma. This influence highlights Parmigianino's early stylistic development under Correggio's impact.
Legacy
Despite early attribution debates, Saint with Two Angels is now recognized as a significant work in Parmigianino's oeuvre, illustrating his early mastery of composition, chiaroscuro, and emotional depth. Its provenance, including early copies in Parma and Vienna, underscores its historical importance.
