About this work

Overview

Prophets and Sibyls is a chromolithograph, a type of colour lithograph print. It was produced for the Arundel Society, an organization that circulated reproductions of Italian frescoes to subscribers.

Technique & Style

The print was created by applying a design to a stone with greasy chalk, then moistening and inking the surface. Multiple stones were used to produce the colours, which were then transferred to paper using a press.

History & Provenance

The Arundel Society commissioned artists to copy Italian fresco cycles from the 14th to 16th centuries. The resulting watercolours were selected by a council and sent to printers. The society distributed over 200,000 chromolithographs before closing in 1897.

Context

Subscribers to the Arundel Society came from diverse backgrounds and accumulated large collections of prints. Many examples were later used in educational and community settings, such as school rooms, churches, and village halls.
