Overview

Philipp Veit’s Germania, executed between 1834 and 1836, is an oil painting measuring roughly 285 × 192 cm. The work depicts the allegorical female figure that traditionally personifies the German nation and is displayed at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure represents Germania, a symbolic embodiment of Germany, rendered as a dignified woman. As an allegorical personification, she conveys notions of national identity and cultural unity that were prominent in early‑19th‑century German discourse.

Technique & Style

Originally painted as a fresco, the composition was later transferred to canvas, preserving its large‑scale format. Veit employed the oil medium to achieve a rich tonal range and a smooth, mural‑like surface appropriate for the work’s monumental setting.

History & Provenance

Germania formed one half of a diptych flanking the expansive mural Introduction of the Arts to Germany by Christianity. Its counterpart, portraying Italia, completes the thematic pair. After the fresco’s relocation, the canvas was acquired by the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, where it remains on view.

Context

The painting belongs to a period when German artists frequently used classical allegories to express contemporary political and cultural aspirations. By pairing Germania with Italia, the mural highlighted the perceived relationship between German and Italian artistic heritage under Christian influence.
