Isaacsz works in a late‑Mannerist manner, employing a restrained palette of deep tones contrasted with bright whites. The figures are rendered with careful attention to texture—fabric folds, metal gleam and the glossy fur of a dog at the table’s edge—while the dark background isolates the group.

Created shortly after the turn of the seventeenth century, the canvas entered the Rijksmuseum’s holdings in the twentieth century, where it remains on display as a representative example of early Dutch civic portraiture.

At the time of its production, Amsterdam’s civic guard companies were prominent social institutions, often commissioning group portraits to commemorate their service. Isaacsz, a Dutch‑born painter active at court, applied his portrait expertise to this collective format, reflecting contemporary trends in public representation.
