About this work

Overview

The work is an oil painting on panel dated to around 1543–1544, presently displayed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It depicts a woman in a white head covering and a dark robe, holding a book, against a dark background. The composition is illuminated from the left, casting shadows across her face and the volume of the book.

Subject & Meaning

The sitter is identified as Maria Salviati, mother of Cosimo I de' Medici. The inclusion of a book may allude to her piety or education, while the restrained expression and modest attire reflect the dignified yet private nature of a noblewoman of the mid‑sixteenth century.

Technique & Style

Executed in oil on wood, the painting shows a delicate handling of light that models the facial features and the folds of the robe. The palette is restrained, dominated by muted tones, and the figure is set against an almost black ground, a device that heightens the three‑dimensional presence of the sitter.

History & Provenance
Shortly thereafter, scholar Lányi linked it to a portrait of Maria Salviati mentioned by Vasari, attributing it to Pontormo.

Acquired by the Uffizi in the early twentieth century, the work was initially catalogued as a piece by Domenico Beccafumi. Shortly thereafter, scholar Lányi linked it to a portrait of Maria Salviati mentioned by Vasari, attributing it to Pontormo. Subsequent research has debated its authorship, with some scholars proposing it as a copy made from Pontormo’s drawings, while others maintain it is an original work by the artist.

Context

The portrait belongs to a period when Florentine courts commissioned personal likenesses to reinforce dynastic prestige. Its uncertain attribution reflects broader challenges in distinguishing Pontormo’s hand from that of his contemporaries and followers, illustrating the complexities of workshop practices in Renaissance Siena and Florence.
