The painting is dated to around 1518-1519 based on its style. It was once attributed to Andrea del Sarto and thought to depict Francesco dell'Ajolle, but Carlo Gamba reattributed it to Pontormo. The portrait was part of Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici's collection.
Subject & Meaning
The subject of the portrait is a musician, but their identity is not certain. The earlier identification as Francesco dell'Ajolle was later disputed by art historian Hermann Keutner, who associated that name with a different portrait.
