About this work

Overview

This oil on panel painting, Portrait of a Musician, is the work of Pontormo, a Renaissance artist. It is a portrait, a representation of a single figure.

History & Provenance

The painting is dated to around 1518-1519 based on its style. It was once attributed to Andrea del Sarto and thought to depict Francesco dell'Ajolle, but Carlo Gamba reattributed it to Pontormo. The portrait was part of Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici's collection.

Subject & Meaning

The subject of the portrait is a musician, but their identity is not certain. The earlier identification as Francesco dell'Ajolle was later disputed by art historian Hermann Keutner, who associated that name with a different portrait.
