About this work

Overview

Created circa 1480, this engraving presents the moment of Christ’s journey to Calvary, accompanied by Saint Veronica clutching the veil that bears his image. Executed in black‑line engraving, the work is part of the National Gallery of Art’s collection in Washington.

Subject & Meaning

The composition juxtaposes the suffering of the crucifixion with the compassionate act of Saint Veronica, whose veil—traditionally said to have imprinted Christ’s likeness—offers a visual counterpoint of mercy amid the Passion narrative.

Technique & Style

Schongauer employs a dense network of fine cross‑hatching to model form and suggest light, achieving subtle gradations of shadow. The figures are rendered with crisp, controlled lines, while the surrounding crowd is suggested by looser, more irregular strokes that enhance the sense of movement toward the central pair.

History & Provenance

The German‑Alsatian artist Martin Schongauer, a leading printmaker before Albrecht Dürer, signed the piece with his monogram. Of the 116 prints that survive from his workshop, this example illustrates his mature engraving practice and has remained in the National Gallery of Art since its acquisition.

Context

Schongauer’s work reflects the late medieval devotion to the Passion and the growing popularity of printed images for private contemplation. His precise engraving technique helped disseminate such religious subjects across northern Europe in the decades preceding the Renaissance print boom.
