About this work

Overview

Created around 1360, this panel forms the front of a devotional casket and illustrates the baptism of Christ. Executed by the Bolognese painter Simone dei Crocifissi, the work belongs to the Italo‑Byzantine tradition that still shaped Italian painting in the mid‑fourteenth century. It is presently part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure of Christ stands in the act of baptism, flanked by three identified saints—Peter, John the Evangelist, and Matthew—along with two additional, unidentified holy men. Their presence underscores the sacramental significance of the scene and links the event to the apostolic foundation of the Church.

Technique & Style

Simone employs the characteristic flatness and stylised drapery of Byzantine‑inspired art, while the muted background recedes to keep focus on the figures. Gold leaf accents trace halos and decorative details, lending a luminous quality that emphasizes the sacred nature of the narrative.

History & Provenance

The panel was originally attached to a wooden casket used for liturgical or private devotion. After passing through various private collections, it entered the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it remains on display as an example of late medieval Bolognese painting.

Context

During Simone’s career, Bologna’s churches were being richly decorated with frescoes and altarpieces. The Baptism of Christ reflects the continued influence of Byzantine visual conventions in northern Italy, even as local artists began to explore more naturalistic approaches that would later define the Renaissance.
