About this work

Overview

Thomas Lawrence’s 1806 oil portrait presents Joseph Banks, the long‑standing President of the Royal Society, seated in a dignified pose. The composition places the elder statesman in a dark interior, his white hair and direct gaze drawing the viewer’s focus. Beside him rests the Society’s ceremonial mace, underscoring his scientific authority.

Subject & Meaning

Banks is shown wearing the insignia of the Order of the Bath, a red sash crossing his chest, signalling his high rank and royal recognition. The inclusion of the Royal Society’s mace reinforces his role as a leading figure in British science and exploration during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Technique & Style

Lawrence employs a restrained palette of deep shadows and muted tones, allowing the subject’s facial features and the red sash to stand out. The brushwork is characteristic of the Regency portrait tradition, combining precise detailing of clothing and insignia with a softer rendering of flesh, creating a balance between realism and idealised presence.

History & Provenance

The portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy’s 1806 show in Somerset House. In 1819 it entered the British Museum’s collection as a gift from antiquarian Daniel Lysons. A widely circulated engraving by Belgian artist Antonie Cardon later disseminated the image beyond the museum’s walls.

Context

Created at a time when Banks was celebrated for his contributions to botany and his leadership of the Royal Society, the painting reflects the era’s practice of commemorating scientific achievement through formal portraiture. Lawrence, a prodigious talent from Bristol, was emerging as the pre‑eminent portraitist of the Regency, later becoming President of the Royal Academy.
