About this work
Overview
This photograph, taken by Henry Frederick Van Der Weyde, features actor Arthur Dacre in a theatrical pose. It is an example of a 'carte de visite', a type of photograph mounted on stiff card.
Technique & Style
The image is an albumen print made from a glass negative, a common technique for 'cartes de visite' and 'cabinet cards' during the Victorian era. These photographs were often used to capture portraits of actors and actresses in costume or everyday dress.
History & Provenance
The photograph was collected by Guy Tristram Little, a solicitor and collector, who bequeathed it to the V&A as part of a large collection of 'cartes de visite' and 'cabinet cards'. Little was also the executor of Mrs. Gabrielle Enthoven, whose theatrical collection contributed to the V&A's Theatre Collections.

Artist
Henry Frederick Van Der Weyde kept a studio on London’s Strand that looked more like a backstage dressing room than a photographer’s space.
