Therbusch employs a delicate handling of light that illuminates the prince’s face, creating a smooth tonal transition and subtle modelling. Soft shadows lend a three‑dimensional quality to the features, while the limited palette and restrained brushwork reflect the transitional character of Rococo moving toward neoclassical restraint.

Created during Therbusch’s mature period, the portrait entered the State Hermitage Museum’s collection, where it remains on display. The painting is part of a broader corpus of roughly two hundred surviving works by the artist, of which at least eighty‑five are documented portraits.

Therbusch, born Anna Dorothea Lisiewski in 1721, was a leading female painter in 18th‑century Prussia. Her career coincided with a period of cultural exchange between the German states and the Russian imperial court, facilitating the acquisition of her works by institutions such as the Hermitage.
