About this work

Overview

Created in 1594 by the Mughal painter Basawan, this small panel forms part of the Prince Salim Album, a collection of courtly miniatures. The work is presently conserved in the Cleveland Museum of Art. It depicts a quiet outdoor setting where a robed figure reads beneath a tree while another individual kneels in deference, accompanied by a dog and a wounded creature on the ground.

Subject & Meaning

The presence of a dog and a wounded animal adds a narrative layer, perhaps alluding to compassion or the fragility of life within a devotional context.

The central figure, clothed in flowing robes, appears absorbed in a book, suggesting a scholarly or spiritual pursuit. The kneeling man bows his head, a gesture of humility or supplication toward the reader, who may represent a holy or learned person. The presence of a dog and a wounded animal adds a narrative layer, perhaps alluding to compassion or the fragility of life within a devotional context.

Technique & Style

Basawan employs the delicate brushwork typical of Mughal miniatures, using a restrained palette of earth tones—soft browns, muted greens, and subtle ochres—to render the foliage, garments, and landscape. Fine lines define the figures and the surrounding vegetation, while the shallow depth created by the rocky hills and a narrow stream conveys a sense of intimacy within the composition.

History & Provenance

The painting originated as part of the Prince Salim Album, a manuscript assembled for the future emperor Jahangir’s son, Salim, in the late 16th century. Over the centuries the album was disassembled, and this particular leaf entered the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it remains on display as an example of Basawan’s contribution to Mughal court painting.
