About this work

Overview

Sebald Beham’s 1546 engraving presents Saint Matthias, a bearded figure crowned with a halo and clothed in a flowing robe. He holds an axe in his right hand, a traditional attribute of the apostle, while a book rests beneath his left arm. The composition is set against an unadorned backdrop, punctuated only by modest foliage and stone at his feet.

Subject & Meaning

The saint is identified by the axe, referencing the instrument of his martyrdom, and the book, symbolizing his role as a disciple and transmitter of the Gospel. The halo marks his sanctity, while his calm expression conveys the contemplative virtues associated with early Christian apostles.

Technique & Style

Beham employs fine, intersecting lines to render textures and volume, using cross‑hatching to model the folds of the robe and the contours of the face. The meticulous line work creates a subtle gradation of tone, giving the figure a three‑dimensional presence despite the flat, monochrome medium of engraving.

History & Provenance

Created in Nuremberg, the work belongs to the period following Albrecht Dürer, when a group of artists known as the “Little Masters” produced small, highly detailed prints for a growing market. Beham’s reputation as a printmaker rests largely on such works, which were circulated among collectors of the mid‑16th century.

Context

The engraving reflects the Northern Renaissance’s emphasis on devotional imagery and technical virtuosity. By rendering a saint in a compact, portable format, Beham catered to private devotional practices while also demonstrating the capabilities of printmaking as a means of disseminating religious subjects beyond the reach of larger painted altarpieces.
