Thomas Bewick’s wood-engraving depicts a Chillingham bull standing in a landscape, with two additional bulls visible in the distance among trees to the right. The print features an elaborate decorative border and is executed on parchment, a rare choice in Bewick’s body of work. The tonal subtlety results from his technical innovations in end-grain wood-engraving, a method he pioneered. The block was later damaged, limiting the number of impressions produced before the border was removed.
