Mars and Venus

Zincke employs a delicate, luminous palette characteristic of Rococo, with soft transitions of light across the figures and a sky rendered in pale blues and cloud wisps. The rendering of fabrics—silken folds of the robe and the sheer veil over the couch—demonstrates the miniature painter’s attention to texture within a relatively small scale.

After its completion in England, the painting entered the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, where it has been displayed as part of the museum’s holdings of early 18th‑century European art. Its provenance traces back to the artist’s workshop, though earlier ownership records remain sparse.
